You’ll Wish You Could Have Had A V8

November 20, 2024

Imagine getting a big portion of your daily recommended Vitamins A and C dosage and assorted other benefits by drinking one small glass of juice. Imagine getting that without any fat or cholesterol, and imagine getting all of that for just 30 calories. That benefit comes in the form of a 5.5-ounce can of V8 vegetable juice. Since 1948, V8 vegetable drink has been produced by the Campbell’s Soup Company, so you can count on it being “mmm, mmm good.” This blog post is not intended to endorse V8, and I have received no compensation for its presentation. Nor is it a commercial for V8. It is, however, good for you, as I will explain in the rest of this article.

V8, a great way to eat healthy and get a head start on those New Year’s resolutions.

V8 is often appreciated for its high vitamin A and C content and ability to contribute to daily vegetable intake. However, its sodium content can concern those watching their sodium intake. Reduced-sodium versions of V8 are also available for those who need to limit their salt consumption. A 5.5-ounce serving of V8 Original 100% Vegetable Juice can be considered a proportional serving of vegetables. The USDA MyPlate guidelines state that 1 cup (8 ounces) of vegetable juice counts as 1 cup of vegetables. Therefore, a 5.5-ounce serving of V8 would count as approximately two-thirds of a vegetable serving.

While V8 can contribute to your daily vegetable intake, consuming whole vegetables is also important. Whole vegetables provide dietary fiber and other nutrients that might be less abundant or absent in vegetable juice. Nonetheless, V8 is a convenient way to help meet your vegetable intake, especially if you struggle to consume enough.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) collaborate on several initiatives, including recommended servings of the various food groups. The Daily Recommended intake of vegetables is approximately two servings, with one cup of equivalent vegetables in each serving.

V8 is unique in that it delivers a significant portion of the recommended amount of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Vitamin A is essential for eye health, skin and reproductive system health, and cell growth. It also helps maintain immune defenses. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It also supports your immune system, collagen creation, and iron absorption. Vitamin C may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by lowering blood pressure and improving the health of blood vessels.
