North America’s Oldest Companies

Not older than dirt, but old and still operating.

It is extremely rare for a company to survive over a century. One North American company has been in existence since 100 years before the American Revolution.

Fewer than thirty companies in North America are estimated to be older than 225 years. Only one, however, has remained operating for almost 350 years—Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC). The company now owns and operates nearly 239 department stores in Canada and the United States, including Hudson’s Bay, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Saks OFF 5TH. Initially headquartered in London, England, its corporate headquarters are in Toronto and New York. HBC is a private business owned by a holding company.
