When it comes to doing things differently, mankind and Mother Nature seem to find new ways to stretch the imagination. Here are some extreme cases.
The World’s Tallest Statue
The Statue of Unity, Gujarat, India
It stands tall at 182 meters (597’ or almost two football fields laid end-to-end). It took almost four years to build. Visitors can enter inside and access the viewing platform and observation deck. Around 10,000 people visit daily.
It was built to honor Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The World’s Largest Airship
LTA Research Pathfinder 1, at over 400’ long, is only about 1/2 of the length of the doomed Hindenburg, but it still dwarfs the famous Goodyear blimps. Learn all about Sergey Brin’s Secret $250 Million Airship.
The World’s Largest Solar Farm
At 200,000 acres (312 square miles), the Xinjiang solar farm in China has just become the world’s largest solar farm, with an installed solar capacity of 5GW.
Officially connected to the grid on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, this enormous solar power plant dwarfs all others. It can produce so much power that it could, in theory, power the entirety of Luxembourg or Papua New Guinea for an entire year.
America’s Oldest Residence
Taos Pueblo, Date Built: c.1000 AD – 1450 AD. The Tao Pueblo is an active Native American community situated at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. The Tao’s rich oral history expresses the longevity of the Tao people, and scientific data dates the oldest buildings as being built between 1000 and 1450 AD. Home to human beings for over 1,000 years.
World’s Tallest Living Steer
Standing over 1.87 m (6 ft 1 in) tall, Tommy isn’t your average steer. In fact, the handsome 13-year-old bovine from Cheshire, Massachusetts, is the Tallest Living Steer. The owners do not know the steer’s weight, but it surely is a lot of steaks.
The World’s Longest-Lasting Light Bulb
The Livermore Centennial Light Bulb, at Firestation #6, Livermore, California, USA, has been burning since it was installed in 1901. As of 2024, the hand-blown bulb has operated at about 4 watts and has been left on 24 hours a day to provide night illumination for the fire engines.
World’s Longest Bridge
The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, China. The structure is a remarkable 102 miles long. It runs between Shanghai and Nanjing in the Jiangsu province, carrying the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway across the Yangtze River delta from Danyang to Kunshan.
World’s Largest Cave
The San Doong Cave, located in Vietnam, near the border with Laos, the largest cave in the world wasn’t widely known until 2009. It has a 38.5 million cubic meters volume and is more than 9 km (5.6 mi.) long.
World’s Largest Drainage System
The Amazon River in South America carries the most enormous volume of water in the world, discharging an average of 219,000 cubic meters per second. This equals 28 billion gallons of water released into the Atlantic Ocean every minute. Think about that. This is the equivalent of 42,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools every minute. The Amazon’s discharge reduces the ocean’s salinity for over 100 miles offshore. Take a journey.
